Bronwyn & Alexander Wedding at Christ Church & Apex Hotel Edinburgh

We had a wonderful day photographing Bronwyn and Alexander’s wedding at Christ Church in Edinburgh, followed by their reception at the Apex Hotel. A church ceremony, a military honour guard, a walk through the city and a ceilidh to finish, it had everything we love about Edinburgh weddings. A Church Wedding at Christ Church, Edinburgh Photographing a church wedding takes a bit of extra planning. Lighting inside churches can be challenging, and there are usually restrictions on where photographers can stand during the ceremony. Christ Church was no different, so we planned our positions in advance and worked with the natural light available. Some of our favourite ceremony photographs come from working within those limits. The standout moment came as Bronwyn and Alexander left the church. Alexander served in the military, and the couple exited through an honour guard with swords raised. It’s not something you see at every wedding, and it made for some brilliant photographs. From the Church to the Apex Hotel After group photos at the church, we walked with the couple through Edinburgh to the Apex Hotel, capturing candids and relaxed couple portraits along the way. Walking through the city with a bride and groom always turns heads, and those in-between moments often produce some of the most natural images of the day. Speeches, Cake Cutting & First Dance At the Apex Hotel we focused on candid photography during the speeches, all the laughter, happy tears and guest reactions that make them such a great part of the day, before moving on to the cake cutting and first dance. The function room at the Apex is a lovely space, but it’s very dark, and it’s the kind of room that would catch a lot of photographers out. We use strobes and flashes bounced around the room to create soft, natural looking light without that harsh flash photography look. It takes more effort to set up, but it makes a huge difference to the final images. A Ceilidh to Finish You can’t beat a ceilidh for energy on the dancefloor, and this one was great fun. Guests of all ages were up dancing, and it gave us some of the liveliest photographs of the whole day. Bronwyn and Alexander, thank you for having us along. It was a pleasure from start to finish, congratulations to you both!
